The Portuguese Red Blend is a flexible term used to describe the numerous and varied compositions of blended red wines made from indigenous Portuguese grape varieties. Portugal is famous for the fortified Port wines of Douro, but also notorious for having hundreds of different grape varieties pla...
The Douro region of northern Portugal is the home of Port. It takes its name from the Douro river, which flows east to west from the Spanish border to Oporto, where it meets the Atlantic Ocean. Though Douro is best known for its fortified wines, total production here is fairly evenly split betwee...
Loads of fruit weight and concentration here, a velvety overlay of pure black fruit, slicked with vanilla and polished spices from the French oak, and a tight mineral intensity. The palate has a really dry, mineral clarity, hugely sour cherry and plum attack, but very refined and very long.
Pure, creamy and dense black fruit from the original Barca Velha vineyards. Lots of oak on this, prominent at present. Very tight, but the tight, wonderfully focused and creamy fruit is constrained by the pure, blue/black finesse of the tannins.
Slightly leafy, incense-like, smoke and schist character on the nose. Intriguing. Very dark, dense black fruit on the palate, with some dark chocolate and bitter plum skin flavours. Very juicy and attractive.
